spring herbs and flowers

Delightful white Japonica blooming away. Just behind the blossoms is an old bright pink Camelia bush, behind that is a tall fence post covered with hot pink bouganvillea which is being strangled by flowering jasmine. Heaven!

I'm leaving this beautiful garden and heading off to Sydney to be a part of the team of florists working on the David Jones flower show. Soo excited! It opens on September 1 -11 and will be fabulous. I'll have loads of lovely floral delights to post, stay tuned and enjoy the onset of spring!

Splendour in the Grass 2011

Backstage in the Artists Communal Area, photo by Marc Grimwade

The Day Spa flowers
Apples, kale, tulips, lilies and tropical foliages, some from Britte's tropical garden!

The Beautiful Britte from Beautiflora. Britte and I have worked together over the years in Byron Bay and she truly is an inspiration to me in life and in flowers.

Crafting a lolly tree

Moss and ivy covered candy tree!
Large arrangement in Artists Communal area. (Please don't eat the lollies)
The most fabulous Travelers Palm. You have to see it to believe it. This beauty weighs a tonne and is gigantic! Just one of the many marvels of the tropics.

I just hope that Kanye West enjoyed the flowers in his room. Oh, and Cold Play, and Janes Addiction, and Modest Mouse and Regina Spektor and James Blake and Gotye and and and..... *sigh* oh well, we had fun again this year.

Musings for today

I found this watercolour on a blog today and actually LOLled. I remembered the joy of a good belly LOL and promised myself I will look for the funnies everywhere I go. They are bountiful.

When I'm not arranging flowers for artists at music festivals, this is where you'll find me. Peace.
I promise to post pictures of the Splendour in the Grass floral wonders next week.
Until then, enjoy the crazy astrological oddities that are upon us, look within, then laugh out loud xxx

Heartsease fairy please

A little bit of flower magic for wounded hearts, the beautiful tiny Heartsease flower. This tiny beauty has many common garden names such as Wild Pansy, Johnny Jump Ups, Viola, among many but my favorite has to be the old folklore names: Love-Lies-Bleeding, Love-In-Idleness, Cuddle-Me, Jump-Up-And-Kiss-Me, Meet-Me-In-The_entry, Kiss-Her-In-The-Buttery and the list goes on!

Some really amazing discoveries about heartsease:

* Banwort is it's original old French name (Not as pretty but charming all the same)

*The flowers have also been used to make yellow, green and blue-green dyes, and the leaves can also be used in part of some dye compositions

*The flower protects itself from rain and dew by drooping its head both at night and in wet weather, and thus the back of the flower and not its face receives the moisture

*They are hermaphrodite plants, self fertile AND are pollinated by the beloved bee

Medicinally, the pretty pansy is useful in the treatment of epilepsy, asthma, excema, skin diseases, whooping cough, and is also a diuretic. Folklore has always regarded this herb as a powerful healer of broken hearts, potent in love charms, and effective in easing any emotion to do with matters of the heart.

Shakespeare makes a more direct reference, probably to Heartsease in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Oberon sends Puck to gather "a little western flower" that maidens call "Love-in-idleness". Oberon's account is that he diverted an arrow from Cupid's bow aimed at "a fair vestal, throned by the west" (supposedly Queen Elizabeth I) to fall upon the plant "before milk-white, now purple with love's wound". The "imperial vot'ress" passes on "fancy-free", destined never to fall in love. The juice of the heartsease now, claims Oberon, "on sleeping eyelids laid, Will make or man or woman madly dote Upon the next live creature that it sees." Equipped with such powers, Oberon and Puck control the fates of various characters in the play to provide Shakespeare's essential dramatic and comic structure for the play.

charity dinner

Babouche the dedicated flower cat supervised the creation of tall vase arrangements that were going off to the Sofitel for a big charity dinner. Babouche made sure that all the cuttings of foliage and leaves were put straight into the green waste bin. He's a real nature lover (loves to kiss a bird or two).
Thankyou Bouquets went to Trish Corelli and Sarah Pozzebon at Tricore Matrix for organising the event and to the Australian Childhood Foundation for all their wonderful work.

Hawthorn berry is in season! Lichen covered sticks, purple kale, purple glads, purple purples for winter splendour.

featured wedding

The beautiful Bec and Veeran had a fusion Indian-Australian wedding at a winery in Red Hill, Victoria. Parts of the ceremony were traditional Indian Hindu wedding rites combined with the western exchange of custom vows.

Friday, April 1, 2011

I opted for strong, bold and bright Indian festival colours for the bride and bridesmaid. We ribboned the bouquets using left over fabric from the bridesmaid's sari, and extra fabric for the bride from her gorgeous Lisa Ho wedding gown.
And we found Japanese maple leaves to edge the bride's bouquet!
The bridesmaid's bouquet was brighter and pinker than the bride's rich palette.
Mr Lincoln roses, dark pink peony's, hot pink water lilies, purple calla's, pink peppercorn, spray roses...aaahhh, the list goes on! This has to be one of my favourite bouquets of all time. Delicious.

we're a little bit famous!

Wow! A friend of mine was scouring the world of wedding blogs and came across a wedding I had done for a lovely young couple who were eloping. She found these images on a gorgeous American blog called oncewed.com and it kinda went viral across a few blogs in the US!!
Sophie's bouquet was a simple mixture of white and mauve sweet pea, queen faviola, freesias and loosely tied with dotter vine.

Sophie simply wanted a hair circlet, so I fashioned it out of wires, dotter vine, queen faviola, mauve sweet pea and pieces of lavender. She is the ultimate pixie don't you think?

What a totally beautiful and natural bride! This pair are SO in love. Sophie and Adam eloped in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. Each had only their best friend with them on the day as a witness. The photo's tell the story... (pics by wrinkle In Time photoraphy).
